The benefits we reap from research are multifold. Of course, there are direct applications, but research also results in the training of excellent students. When we talk about thinking outside the box, that’s what learning to think like a scientist is all about. Even if these graduates don’t go into basic research themselves, they’ll be able to apply broadly the critical thinking skills that they learn through interacting with researchers. And I think we benefit when we enrich our knowledge base in this way. |
